Akili Group is an investor-funded social enterprise that designs and implements carbon projects with the goal of transforming community livelihoods holistically, and restoring ecosystems. To date, the majority of the project funds are directed into project activities that advance our social mission in the communities we work with and in.
Primary Benefits (before carbon credits are realized):
Prior to earning carbon revenues from our investor-funded projects, communities already begin to benefit directly from our work.
- Seedlings & Inputs: Farmers receive tree seedlings, such as avocado, which they can later harvest and sell for profit. They also gain access to affordable inputs such as manure, water retainers, and biochar, which improve soil fertility and boost survival rates of planted seedlings.

- Training & Capacity Building: We provide capacity building and specialized training in key areas including agronomy, apiculture and value addition (honey, beeswax, propolis, bee venom), soil regeneration, and climate-smart agriculture.

- Partnerships for Growth: Through partnerships with institutions, we deliver both practical education and certification opportunities. These partnerships also allow us to tap into research that strengthens our impact in the field, while creating a broader network of trained community members who can act as peer educators and reinforce the adoption of sustainable farming practices.

In addition, we collaborate with Community Forest Associations (CFAs) and local organizations to grow and supply seedlings, creating sustainable income opportunities for their members, and ensuring project success.
- Local Employment: Our projects further generate local employment, coordinated through our group framework. We recruit from within the same communities where projects are based, hiring individuals for roles such as farmer mobilization, farmer sensitization, registration, training, input delivery (trees, cookstoves, etc) and monitoring, all critical functions that ensure the long-term success of the projects.

Additionally, these same community members are hired for local nursery set-up and management, data collection, and establishing a system of purchasing raw materials such as seeds for value addition for sale into the market for profit.
- Healthcare & Financial Inclusion: Farmers also benefit from improved healthcare access through our partnership with Banda Health.

- Financial Inclusion: Through Akili Development SACCO, farmers who are typically excluded from traditional financing systems can access affordable loans, enabling them to save, borrow, invest, and grow their livelihoods.
- Beekeeping & Value Addition: Finally, all farmers registered in our projects are linked to our other locally established initiatives, giving them access to complementary inputs such as Langstroth beehives. Alongside this, they receive hands-on training that equips them with the practical skills needed to maximize the beekeeping value chain, unlocking new income-generating opportunities not only in honey production but also in related areas such as beeswax, propolis, and value-added products.

Secondary Benefits (after carbon credits are realized):
Once carbon projects mature and generate credits, revenues are shared in three ways:
- Investors receive their return – recouping their investment, and earning a profit
- Akili Group earns a share of carbon credits
- Communities receive at least 40% of the value of carbon credits, in line with the Climate Change (Carbon Markets) Regulations, 2024 and the Climate Change Act (Cap. 387A, 2023 amendment. This 40% is reinvested in long-term community development, including:
- Scholarships for education
- Water infrastructure
- Expanded healthcare services
- Strengthened training programs
- And other initiatives, consultatively determined in each community in accordance to their needs
Through this two-tiered model, Akili Group demonstrates a clear and measurable commitment to our social mission. We reinvest in the communities we serve, delivering both immediate benefits and long-term transformation that uplifts people, restores biodiversity, and combats climate change.
